The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum brings you face-to-face with some of the most significant aircraft, spacecraft, and naval vessels in history. Located at Pier 86 on Manhattan's Hudson River, this floating museum centres around the USS Intrepid, a WWII aircraft carrier that survived kamikaze attacks and later served as a NASA recovery ship.

You'll explore the flight deck where naval aviators launched into combat, stand beneath the Space Shuttle Enterprise that paved the way for human spaceflight, and walk through the same Concorde that carried passengers at twice the speed of sound. The museum also houses the submarine USS Growler and dozens of historic military aircraft, from Cold War jets to modern helicopters.

Interactive exhibits and flight simulators make this particularly engaging for families, while aviation enthusiasts can spend hours examining the technical details of each aircraft. The museum's location on the Hudson River provides excellent views of Manhattan's skyline, especially at sunset.

Plan Your Visit to Intrepid Museum

The museum opens daily at 10am, with last entry at 4pm (closing at 5pm). Weekday mornings offer the smallest crowds, whilst weekends can get busy, particularly around the submarine. Allow at least 2-3 hours for your visit, though aviation enthusiasts often spend much longer exploring every aircraft.

The museum sits at Pier 86 (West 46th Street and 12th Avenue). Take the M42 bus or subway to 42nd Street-Port Authority, then walk west to the Hudson River. Most of the ship is wheelchair accessible, though some historic areas like the bridge and parts of the submarine require stairs.

Combine your visit with other nearby attractions like the Edge Observation Deck for panoramic city views or explore more of Manhattan's history at the Empire State Building. Both offer different perspectives on New York's skyline that complement the waterfront views from the Intrepid's deck.
