Dolly Parton tells her own story on Broadway. Her life, her words and her greatest songs at the St. James Theatre from December 2026.
Dolly Parton brings her own life story to Broadway in Dolly: A True Original Musical, opening at the St. James Theatre. Told through Dolly's own words and the songs that made her a legend, the production traces her journey from a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains to the top of the music world. Previews begin December 7, 2026, with opening night set for January 19, 2027, which also happens to be Dolly's 81st birthday.
Directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, the show features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Dolly Parton and Maria S. Schlatter. The score is built from Dolly's best-loved songs, including "I Will Always Love You," "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and "9 to 5," alongside new music written especially for the stage. After a sold-out pre-Broadway run at the Fisher Center in Nashville, Dolly makes its Broadway debut in the heart of the Theater District.
This is the story of a true original, told the way only Dolly could tell it. The musical follows her rise from the mountains of East Tennessee through the honky-tonks of Nashville and on to worldwide fame, celebrating the songwriting, grit and generosity that shaped an American icon. Choreography is by Mandy Moore, with music supervision by two-time Tony winner Stephen Oremus and orchestrations by John Clancy.
Expect a big-hearted, feel-good evening of country classics and brand-new songs, staged with all the warmth and sparkle you would hope for from a Dolly Parton show. If you love a great Broadway musical, you might also enjoy Moulin Rouge! The Musical or the Jazz Age glamour of The Great Gatsby.
