About
Golden Theatre: Broadway's Intimate Powerhouse
The Golden Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 252 W 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 800 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1927.
History of Golden Theatre
The John Golden Theatre opened on February 24, 1927, originally as the Theatre Masque, designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a Spanish style with spiral columns, arches, and Moorish-inspired panels. The theater was renamed in 1937 when producer John Golden assumed management.
At 800 seats with a single balcony, the Golden is one of Broadway's more intimate houses. This scale has made it a favorite for plays and small musicals that thrive on close audience connection. The single-balcony design was unusual for its era and was intentionally chosen to create a more democratic seating arrangement.
The Golden has an outsized track record for award-winning productions. Avenue Q won the Tony for Best Musical here in 2003. Red won the Tony for Best Play in 2010. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike took the same prize in 2013. Other landmark runs include Tobacco Road (1933), Angel Street (which ran for 1,295 performances beginning in 1941), and the original Waiting for Godot with Bert Lahr (1956).
