Experience Japan's ancient tea ceremony tradition at Flower Teahouse, housed within a beautifully preserved machiya (wooden townhouse) in Kyoto's historic Gion area. This authentic cultural experience introduces you to the centuries-old practice of Japanese tea ceremonies, once reserved for nobility and Buddhist monks, now accessible to everyone.

Your English-speaking host guides you through the deep-rooted history of Japanese tea rituals and the evolution of matcha in historic Kyoto. You'll learn about the carefully orchestrated etiquette, traditional instruments, and room layout before trying your hand at whisking your own bowl of matcha. The experience includes seasonal wagashi sweets that perfectly complement the tea ceremony tradition.

Choose between shared sessions or book a private ceremony for a more intimate experience. Private sessions offer exclusive use of the teahouse and work particularly well for families with young children or groups with guides. For added authenticity, traditional kimono rental is available to wear during your ceremony.

Good to Know

Sessions take place at Tea Ceremony Camellia FLOWER in the Gion/Kiyomizu area. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled booking time. The machiya setting provides an authentic atmosphere whilst remaining accessible to visitors.

Children under 6 are welcome but won't be served matcha due to caffeine content. Private sessions are recommended for families with young children or if you're bringing a guide or translator. All sweets are vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Photography is encouraged during the ceremony, but please disable flash. Short videos are permitted only during private sessions. Traditional kimono rental upgrades are available for those wanting the complete cultural experience and memorable photos.
