Your guide to Kuta

Your guide to Kuta tickets

Few places in South-East Asia have absorbed as much global attention as Kuta, the coastal town on the southwestern edge of Bali that effectively introduced the island to mass international tourism. What began as a quiet fishing settlement backed by a long arc of black-sand beach became, from the 1970s onwards, the first point of contact for surfers, backpackers, and eventually package holidaymakers arriving through the nearby Ngurah Rai International Airport. That history is written into the place itself: the narrow gang lanes threading between surf shops and warungs, the temples draped in poleng cloth standing a few metres from neon-lit bars, the smell of incense competing with salt air off the Indian Ocean.

The beach remains the organising fact of Kuta. It runs roughly three kilometres from the southern end near Tuban up through Legian and into Seminyak, and the gradations between those zones tell you a great deal about how the town has evolved. Kuta proper is the loudest and most compressed section, where the surf schools cluster and the sunsets draw crowds that gather on the sand as a matter of daily ritual. Legian, immediately to the north, carries a slightly quieter register without abandoning the beach-town character. Seminyak, further still, has drifted into a different register entirely, with design-conscious restaurants and boutiques that feel a world away from the original backpacker strip, even though they are connected to it by a single unbroken shoreline.
