Whistler sits about 125 kilometres north of Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, one of the most dramatically scenic drives in North America. The corridor follows Howe Sound before climbing through Coast Mountain terrain, and the journey itself sets the tone for everything that follows. This is a place shaped almost entirely by its physical setting, a resort town that grew around two peaks, Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain, which together form one of the largest ski areas on the continent. The 2010 Winter Olympics brought Whistler to a global audience, but the town had been drawing serious skiers and snowboarders since the 1960s, and that long relationship with mountain sport has given it a confidence that purpose-built resorts often lack.

Whistler Village is the pedestrianised core, a compact grid of hotels, restaurants, and shops that connects directly to the gondola base stations. It was designed from the outset as a car-free environment, which gives it an unusual ease of movement for a mountain destination. Skiers in full kit walk the same cobbled paths as summer hikers and mountain bikers, and the village functions across all four seasons rather than shutting down between snowfalls. Upper Village, a quieter cluster around the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, offers a slightly different pace, and the residential neighbourhoods of Creekside to the south retain the character of the original settlement before the resort infrastructure arrived.
