Quarteira sits along the southern Portuguese coast where the Algarve's limestone cliffs give way to a long, flat stretch of golden sand. It is one of the region's older fishing settlements, and that identity persists in the early mornings when the market along the seafront promenade fills with the catch brought in overnight. The town occupies a curious position in the Algarve's tourist geography: close enough to the manicured resort of Vilamoura to feel its gravitational pull, yet distinct enough in character to retain the texture of a working Portuguese town, where locals shop, eat, and go about their lives alongside visitors.

The beach itself is the town's defining feature, a broad expanse of fine sand that stretches for several kilometres and faces due south into the Atlantic. The water here is calmer than on the more exposed western Algarve coast, and the summer sun is reliable and intense from June through September. Outside those months the crowds thin considerably, the light softens, and the promenade takes on a quieter, more local character. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for walking the seafront or exploring the surrounding area without the compression of high season.
