Whitby ガイド
Few places in England carry their mythology as visibly as Whitby. The ruined abbey on the East Cliff has watched over this North Yorkshire fishing town for centuries, its skeletal Gothic arches catching the light differently at every hour, and it was those same dramatic silhouettes that lodged themselves in Bram Stoker's imagination when he visited in 1890 and began sketching what would become Dracula. That literary inheritance sits comfortably alongside the town's older, harder history as a working port, a whaling centre, and the harbour from which Captain James Cook's ships were built before they changed the map of the world.
The town divides naturally along the River Esk, which cuts through the valley before meeting the North Sea. The west side holds the main shopping streets, the famous swing bridge, and the long stretch of beach that fills with families through the summer months. Cross the bridge and the character shifts: the east side climbs steeply through a tangle of narrow yards and red-roofed cottages, past the parish church of St Mary with its box pews and sailors' memorials, and up the 199 steps to the clifftop where the abbey ruins stand against the sky. That climb is not incidental; it is the experience of Whitby itself, the physical effort giving way to a view that takes in the harbour mouth, the North Sea horizon, and the red pantile rooftops below.
