Few places in England carry their mythology as visibly as Whitby. The ruined abbey on the East Cliff has watched over this North Yorkshire fishing town for centuries, its skeletal Gothic arches catching the light differently at every hour, and it was those same dramatic silhouettes that lodged themselves in Bram Stoker's imagination when he visited in 1890 and began sketching what would become Dracula.
