Cagliari sits at the southern tip of Sardinia, looking out across the Gulf of Angels with a confidence that comes from several thousand years of continuous habitation. Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Pisans, and the Spanish Crown all left their mark here, and the city wears those layers openly rather than tidying them away. The result is a place that feels genuinely Mediterranean in the oldest sense of the word, shaped by trade, conquest, and an unbroken relationship with the sea.

The Castello district, the medieval quarter that crowns the city's limestone hill, is where much of that history becomes tangible. Its walls were raised by the Pisans in the thirteenth century, and the two towers that still stand at its corners, the Torre di San Pancrazio and the Torre dell'Elefante, remain among the most intact examples of Pisan military architecture anywhere in Italy. From the bastions up here the view takes in the city's rooftops, the lagoons to the west where pink flamingos gather in considerable numbers, and on clear days the coastline stretching far to the south. Below Castello, the Stampace and Marina quarters carry a different energy, with narrow streets opening unexpectedly onto Baroque churches and small squares where the pace of daily life asserts itself without any particular effort to attract attention.
