Few cities carry the weight of Cairo. Spread across the eastern bank of the Nile and spilling into the desert beyond, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban centres on earth, a place where pharaonic monuments, medieval Islamic architecture, and a roaring twenty-first-century metropolis occupy the same skyline without apparent contradiction.
