The main street retains a good deal of its nineteenth-century commercial architecture, and the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum holds one of the more substantial regional collections in Queensland, drawing on the material culture of the goldfields era as well as the timber and dairy industries that sustained the district once the rushes subsided. For a visitor arriving without fixed expectations, Gympie rewards a slower kind of attention than the purpose-built tourist towns further east.
