Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's Tony-winning La Cage aux Folles returns to the stage in an all-Black production at New York City Center as part of the acclaimed Encores! series. Billy Porter and Wayne Brady lead the cast in this celebration of love, family, and acceptance set in St. Tropez.

The Story

Georges and Albin have been happily together for over 20 years, jointly running La Cage aux Folles, a glamorous drag nightclub on the French Riviera. When their son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative politician and asks Albin to make himself scarce for the in-laws' visit, the ensuing chaos tests the bonds of family and the meaning of authenticity. Herman's score includes "I Am What I Am" and "The Best of Times."

Directed by Robert O'Hara, this production stars Billy Porter as Albin and Wayne Brady as Georges. The Encores. staging uses the original 1983 orchestrations, unheard live since the show's original Broadway run. La Cage aux Folles arrived on Broadway in 1983 during the AIDS crisis and helped bring gay life into mainstream American culture.
