High in the Calabrian Apennines, Spezzano della Sila sits within the Sila plateau, one of the largest upland forests in Europe and a landscape that operates on a scale quite different from the sun-baked coastline that most visitors associate with the far south of Italy. The experience that draws most visitors to this corner of Calabria is an encounter with the Giants of Sila, a grove of Laricio pines that are among the oldest and tallest trees in Italy. Some of these specimens are thought to be several centuries old, their trunks rising to extraordinary heights before the canopy opens out, and standing among them produces a particular kind of quiet that is difficult to find elsewhere in southern Italy.
