Few cities in Southeast Asia carry their layers as openly as George Town. Unesco recognised the historic core in 2008, designating George Town, alongside Melaka, as a World Heritage Site for its exceptional testimony to multicultural trading town culture. The protected zone covers the old commercial quarter, where streets named after long-departed colonial officials now shelter some of the most intact nineteenth-century urban fabric in the region. Chew Jetty, the largest of the waterfront clan jetties, extends on wooden stilts over the strait and remains a living community rather than a preserved exhibit. The Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Queen Street and the Khoo Kongsi clan house on Cannon Square anchor the Tamil and Hokkien presences respectively, each building dense with ornamental ambition.
