Sliema sits on a peninsula jutting into the waters between Marsamxett Harbour and St Julian's Bay, and its position has shaped everything about it. Once a quiet fishing village favoured by the Maltese middle classes in the nineteenth century, it grew steadily into the island's principal commercial and residential seafront, a place where the promenade, known locally as the Ferries, draws walkers, swimmers, and people-watchers in equal measure.
