Broadway Theatre: One of Broadway's Grand Stages
The Broadway Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 1681 Broadway, New York, NY 10019, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,763 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1924.
History of Broadway Theatre
The Broadway Theatre opened on December 25, 1924, as B. S. Moss's Colony Theatre, a movie palace and vaudeville venue designed by Eugene De Rosa. The building was converted for legitimate theater use in 1930 and renamed the Broadway Theatre, taking its name from its location on Broadway between 52nd and 53rd Streets.
Built in Italian Renaissance style with a brick and terra-cotta facade, the Broadway Theatre is one of the largest houses in the Theater District at 1,763 seats. This scale has made it the natural home for the biggest, most bold musicals on Broadway.
The theater's history includes some of Broadway's most classic productions. The original productions of South Pacific, Funny Girl, The Music Man, Cabaret, Gypsy, and Evita all played the Broadway Theatre. Les Miserables and Miss Saigon both had long runs here. The 2009 revival of West Side Story was staged here, as was the hit musical King Kong.
