Few places in Sicily carry the weight of Calatafimi-Segesta quite so quietly. The town sits in the Trapani province of western Sicily, on a ridge of the Sicani hills where the landscape opens into wide, sun-bleached valleys that have been inhabited, contested, and mythologised for more than two and a half thousand years. A short climb above the temple sits a Greek theatre, cut into the hillside and oriented so that the audience, in antiquity as now, looked out across a panorama of hills rolling towards the Gulf of Castellammare. The combination of the two structures within a single archaeological park makes Segesta unusual even by Sicilian standards, and the site draws visitors from Palermo, Trapani, and further afield throughout the year.
