The construction of the Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción, also known as the Coria Cathedral, began in 1498 and was completed in 1748, after 250 years. The site chosen for this temple was previously home to the city's main mosque and a prior Visigothic cathedral. Inside, it features a Gothic style, although due to the extensive construction period, it also includes Renaissance and Baroque elements. The building suffered significant damage in 1755 during the Lisbon earthquake. It holds one of Christianity's most important relics, a linen tablecloth said to date from the first century according to leading researchers, made of white linen with decorative blue bands created using indigo.
