Your Journey at the KBr Fundación MAPFRE Barcelona Photo Center

Explore Pioneering Photography in Barcelona

Immerse yourself in the dynamic world of photography at the KBr Fundación MAPFRE Barcelona Photo Center. Located at Port Olímpic, this vibrant institution serves as a hub for discovering both historic and contemporary photographic art. Spanning over 1400 square meters, the center offers a thoughtfully curated environment where the artistry and documentary power of photography meets educational programming.

A Center Dedicated to the Art of Photography

KBr is much more than an exhibition venue. From its inception, it has celebrated photography as both a creative art form and an essential means of understanding our world. The center showcases a broad spectrum of photographers, featuring visionaries like Diane Arbus, Graciela Iturbide and Paolo Gasparini. Both first-time visitors and seasoned photography enthusiasts will appreciate the changing calendar of exhibitions and events which allow every visit to deliver fresh perspectives.

Engage with Inspiring Exhibitions and Collections

The photo center houses permanent displays alongside regularly updated temporary exhibitions. Collections span works from the early days of photography in the 18th century to present-day projects. The center frequently highlights artists who have shaped the evolution of photography as well as new talents whose fresh perspectives contribute to the art’s future. The permanent collection creates a thorough narrative of the medium’s development, while temporary exhibitions ensure continued enrichment and variety.

Featured Exhibitions

Until May 12th, 2024: Consuelo Kanaga: Capturing the Spirit Explore nearly sixty years of American photographer Consuelo Kanaga’s groundbreaking work. Kanaga’s images document pressing social realities, including urban hardship, the struggle for workers’ rights, racial inequality and everyday life. Her sensitive portrayal of African American communities stands as a testament to documentary photography’s influence on social awareness. Nearly 500 vintage photographs and rare materials chart the radical vision of this important artist.

The Domestic Camera: Photographic Hobby in Catalonia (ca. 1880-1936) This show investigates the rise of amateur photography in Catalonia prior to the Civil War. It traces the first era when personal narratives could be captured and shared independent of professional studios. The exhibition draws on multi-faceted themes to reveal how a new photographic language grew in popularity and how local and international trends shaped the cultural identity of early 20th-century photography enthusiasts.

Educational Programs and Community Engagement

Education is at the heart of KBr’s mission. Attend inspiring lectures, take part in hands-on workshops, and engage directly with leading figures in the photography world. Programs are tailored to diverse audiences, from young learners discovering the basics to experienced photographers honing their craft. The prestigious KBr Photography Prize encourages the next generation by recognising emerging talents, reflecting the center’s dedication to creative growth.

Spaces Designed for Creativity

The center’s open galleries and comfortable learning spaces offer room for quiet observation and lively discussion alike. Facilities are accessible and thoughtfully arranged to welcome everyone, whether you are experiencing the art solo or as part of a group outing.
