Zaandam sits just north of Amsterdam along the river Zaan, and its identity is shaped almost entirely by that waterway. The Zaan valley was the industrial engine of the Dutch Golden Age, a place where hundreds of windmills once ground mustard, pressed oil, and sawed timber for the shipyards that kept the Dutch Republic's merchant fleet afloat. That heritage is not merely commemorated here; it is physically present in the timber-framed houses painted in the deep greens and teals that have become the region's visual signature, in the working mills that still turn along the riverbank, and in the open-air museum village of Zaanse Schans just to the north of the town centre.
Zaanse Schans is the obvious starting point for anyone arriving from Amsterdam, and the short journey by train or road makes it an easy half-day from the capital. The reconstructed village draws together authentic windmills, a clog workshop, a cheese farm, and traditional craftsmen's houses relocated from across the Zaan region over the decades. It reads as a curated landscape, which it is, but the mills are genuine working structures and the river views behind them are unimproved. The Zaan itself is wide and grey-green, and on overcast days the reflections of the mill sails in the water produce the kind of composition that Dutch painters spent centuries trying to capture on canvas.
