Few American towns carry the weight of history quite as visibly as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the landscape itself has been shaped by three days in July 1863 that altered the course of the Civil War. Gettysburg sits in Adams County in south-central Pennsylvania, roughly two hours' drive from both Philadelphia and Washington D.C., which makes it a natural destination for visitors travelling the mid-Atlantic corridor. The borough itself is compact and walkable, centred on Lincoln Square, where the historic streets radiate outward past brick storefronts, churches, and buildings that were pressed into service as field hospitals during and after the battle. The Gettysburg National Military Park surrounds and interpenetrates the town in a way that is unusual even among American battlefield sites: monuments, cannon placements, and preserved earthworks appear at the edges of residential streets, blurring the boundary between living community and commemorated ground.
