Venetian carnival masks have been crafted by hand for centuries, each one painted and decorated using techniques passed down through generations of artisans. In this 75-minute workshop near St Mark's Square, you paint and decorate your own mask under the guidance of an expert instructor, taking home a genuine piece of Venetian craft.

The workshop

Your instructor, a master mask-maker who speaks English, French, Italian, and Spanish, guides you through the process step by step. Starting with a plain white mask form, you learn to apply base colours, build up layers, add decorative details, and finish with the embellishments, feathers, and trimmings that give Venetian masks their character. All materials are provided, and no artistic experience is necessary.

The tradition

Venetian masks date back to at least the 13th century, when citizens wore them during Carnival season to temporarily erase social distinctions. Different mask types, from the plague doctor's beaked visage to the full-face bauta, each carried specific social meanings and permissions. Your instructor explains this history as you work, connecting your creative activity to centuries of Venetian culture.

A lasting souvenir

The mask you create is yours to take home. Unlike mass-produced tourist souvenirs, it carries the evidence of your own handiwork and the techniques you learned. The workshop works well for families (children are welcome), couples, and solo visitors alike.
