Few places on the American East Coast wear their purpose as openly as Ocean City, Maryland. This ten-mile barrier island sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Sinepuxent Bay, and it has spent the better part of a century perfecting a single ambition: giving families, groups, and day-trippers a place to shed their routines entirely. The wide, flat beach stretches from the inlet at the southern tip all the way to the Delaware state line, and the famous Boardwalk runs along its edge for three miles, lined with arcades, food stands, and the particular salt-air energy that has made Ocean City one of the most visited resort towns on the Eastern Seaboard.

The Boardwalk itself is the gravitational centre of the town, and most first-time visitors find their bearings there before spreading out along the numbered streets that run perpendicular to the ocean. The southern end, near the inlet, has a denser, older character, with the amusement pier jutting out over the water and the smell of Thrasher's french fries drifting across the planks. Further north, the atmosphere shifts gradually, the crowds thin a little, and the commercial strip gives way to quieter residential blocks. The inlet area and the stretch around the pier remain the focal points for visitors who want the full Ocean City experience in concentrated form.
