墨雅 指南
Mgarr occupies a quietly commanding position on the south-eastern tip of Gozo, the smaller of Malta's two main inhabited islands, and its harbour is the first thing most visitors see of this ancient, unhurried place. The short ferry crossing from Cirkewwa on the Maltese mainland deposits passengers directly onto the quayside, where fishing boats bob alongside the regular service vessels and the limestone hillside rises steeply behind the port. That arrival moment, stepping off the boat into air that smells of salt and warm stone, sets the tone for everything Gozo offers.
Gozo itself is distinct from Malta in ways that go beyond mere geography. The island is smaller, quieter, and markedly more agricultural, its interior a patchwork of terraced fields, ancient rubble walls, and villages whose parish churches dominate the skyline with a confidence that seems disproportionate to the population. Mgarr is the gateway to all of it. From the harbour, roads climb inland towards Victoria, the island's compact capital, known locally as Rabat, where the Citadella fortress crowns a central hill and has done so, in various forms, since the Bronze Age. The cathedral inside the Citadella contains one of the more remarkable trompe-l'oeil painted ceilings in the Mediterranean, a flat surface made to read as a full dome, a detail that rewards the short walk up from the town below.
