Venice's maritime story

Venice was a naval superpower for centuries, and the Naval History Museum (MUNAV) preserves that legacy near the historic Arsenal where the Republic's warships were built. This two-day pass includes the museum's extensive collections and entry to the Enrico Dandolo, a Cold War-era submarine now permanently moored as a museum ship. The museum

MUNAV spans multiple floors of naval history, from the age of galleys to modern warships. Scale models of Venetian vessels, navigational instruments, weapons, and maritime art trace the evolution of naval technology and Venice's role in it. The collection includes a model of the Bucintoro, the Doge's ceremonial barge, and artefacts from Venice's battles against Ottoman and Genoese fleets.

The submarine

The Enrico Dandolo is a Toti-class submarine that served in the Italian Navy during the Cold War. You can board and walk through its cramped compartments: the torpedo room, engine room, control room, and crew quarters. The experience is both claustrophobic and fascinating, showing what life was like for submariners in a vessel designed for stealth rather than comfort.

The Arsenal context

The museum sits near the Venice Arsenal, which at its peak was the largest industrial complex in Europe, capable of producing a fully equipped warship in a single day. The Arsenal's walls and towers are visible from the museum area, placing the collection in its geographical and historical context.
