Music Box Theatre: Irving Berlin's Broadway Gem

The Music Box Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 239 W 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,009 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1921.

History of Music Box Theatre

The Music Box Theatre opened on September 22, 1921, built by Irving Berlin and producer Sam H. Harris specifically to house Berlin's Music Box Revues. Designed by C. Howard Crane in a neo-Georgian style, the theater was conceived as a dignified manor house rather than a typical theatrical showcase. The limestone facade was inspired by the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia.

Berlin's Music Box Revues ran from 1921 to 1925, establishing the theater as a premier Broadway venue. The interior features Adam-style details with Palladian motifs, and the intimate 1,009-seat house has remained one of Broadway's most sought-after addresses for over a century.

The Music Box has premiered some of American theater's most important works. Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's Once in a Lifetime and The Man Who Came to Dinner both opened here. I Remember Mama (1944) featured Marlon Brando's Broadway debut. More recently, Dear Evan Hansen played the Music Box to sold-out houses, and the theater hosted the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Suffs.
