Chelmsford sits at the confluence of the rivers Can and Chelmer in Essex, roughly thirty miles north-east of central London, and carries a quiet confidence that belies its modest size. The city's history is longer and stranger than its tidy market-town appearance suggests. The Romans established a settlement here called Caesaromagus, one of only two places in Britain to receive the imperial prefix, and traces of that occupation have been recorded across the area for centuries. The Chelmsford Museum, housed in Oaklands Park, holds collections that span that Roman past through to the county's natural history, and the park itself offers a generous green space within easy reach of the centre. The cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Peter and Saint Cedd, is compact by cathedral standards but possesses a genuine medieval core, with a south porch dating to the fifteenth century.
