Ang iyong gabay sa Valletta
Valletta earns its place among Europe's smallest capital cities with a density of history that belies its compact footprint. Built on a narrow peninsula between two of the finest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, it was conceived in the sixteenth century as a fortress city by the Knights of St John following the Great Siege of 1565, and its grid of Baroque streets has remained largely intact ever since. UNESCO recognised that coherence in 1980, listing the entire city as a World Heritage Site. Walking its limestone pavements, you are moving through a place that was designed all at once, with a purpose, and that sense of deliberate order still shapes the experience of being here.
The Grand Harbour to the south and Marsamxett Harbour to the north frame the peninsula on either side, and the views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens across to the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua are among the most photographed in Malta. The gardens themselves sit above the Saluting Battery, where cannon are still fired at noon. Republic Street runs the length of the city from City Gate to Fort St Elmo at the tip of the peninsula, and most first-time visitors find their bearings along this spine before venturing into the quieter parallel streets that drop steeply toward the harbours on either side.
