Penang occupies a small island off the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia, connected to the mainland by two of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia, yet its real distances are cultural rather than physical. The island has accumulated centuries of influence from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and British colonial traditions, and the result is a place whose identity resists easy summary. George Town rewards slow movement. The old city core around Armenian Street and Lebuh Chulia is where the Peranakan, or Straits Chinese, mercantile culture left its most visible marks: ornate clan association halls, temples fragrant with incense, and the kind of architectural detail that accumulates meaning only when you stop to look at it properly.
