St. James Theatre: Where Musicals Make History
The St. James Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 246 W 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,710 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1927.
History of St. James Theatre
The St. James Theatre opened on September 26, 1927, as Erlanger's Theatre, designed by Warren and Wetmore, the firm famous for Grand Central Terminal. Built in neo-Georgian style with a stucco facade, the St. James is one of Broadway's largest houses at 1,710 seats and has premiered more landmark musicals than almost any other theater.
The theater was renamed in 1932 and passed through several owners before the Shubert Organization, then Jujamcyn Theatres. Its double-story cast-iron loggia and twin marquees give the West 44th Street facade a distinguished presence.
The St. James production list is staggering. Oklahoma! (1943) launched the golden age of Broadway musicals from this stage. The King and I, The Pajama Game, Li'l Abner, Hello, Dolly. (1964, starring Carol Channing), Barnum, and The Who's Tommy all premiered here. The Producers (2001), starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, broke box office records at the St. James.
