The Querini Stampalia Foundation occupies a Venetian palazzo that has been transformed by one of the 20th century's greatest architects. Carlo Scarpa's restoration between 1961 and 1963 created a dialogue between historic and modern that makes the building itself as compelling as the art it contains. Over 400 paintings span centuries of Venetian and Italian art.

The Scarpa restoration

Scarpa's work at the Querini Stampalia is considered among his finest. His ground floor and garden redesign introduced concrete, steel, and water features into the medieval palazzo with extraordinary sensitivity. Every detail, from door handles to floor tiles, bears his distinctive hand. For architecture enthusiasts, this alone justifies the visit.

The collection

The Querini family's collection fills the upper floors with paintings by Bellini, Longhi, Tiepolo, and other Italian masters. Period rooms recreate the life of a wealthy Venetian family, complete with furniture, ceramics, and decorative arts. Pietro Longhi's scenes of 18th-century Venetian daily life are particularly engaging, capturing card games, masked balls, and domestic moments with documentary precision.

A quieter Venice

The Foundation sits near Campo Santa Maria Formosa but attracts far fewer visitors than the Accademia or Ca' d'Oro. This means you can study the paintings and Scarpa's details at leisure, without the crowds that characterise Venice's major museums. Temporary exhibitions add contemporary perspectives to the historic collection.
