Radio City Music Hall: The Showplace of the Nation

The Radio City Music Hall is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 1260 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10020, this concert hall has a capacity of 5,960 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1932.

History of Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall opened on December 27, 1932, as the crown jewel of Rockefeller Center. Designed by Edward Durell Stone with legendary Art Deco interiors by Donald Deskey, Radio City was built on land originally planned for a new Metropolitan Opera House before the 1929 stock market crash redirected the project toward popular entertainment.

The interior is one of the finest Art Deco spaces in the world. Deskey used glass, aluminum, chrome, bakelite, and leather with geometric patterns that emphasize modern restraint over the ornate decoration of the era. The Great Stage, designed by Peter Clark, features a system of hydraulic lifts that was revolutionary for its time and remains in use today. The famous 'Mighty Wurlitzer' organ is one of the largest theater organs ever built.

Radio City is best known as the home of the Rockettes, whose Christmas Dynamic has been a New York holiday tradition since 1933. The venue has also hosted the Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and NFL Draft. With a seating capacity of 5,960, it remains one of the largest indoor theaters in the world.
