Din guide till Casablanca
Casablanca occupies a stretch of Atlantic coastline that has shaped its character as thoroughly as any architectural movement or colonial chapter. Morocco's largest city and its commercial engine, it sits roughly midway along the country's western seaboard, facing an ocean that keeps temperatures moderate and the air salt-edged for much of the year. Where Marrakesh draws visitors into medieval medinas and Fes preserves the texture of an ancient Islamic city, Casablanca has always been something else: a modern metropolis that grew at speed, absorbed waves of influence, and ended up with a personality that resists easy categorisation.
The French protectorate years, which ran through the first half of the twentieth century, left an indelible mark on the urban fabric. The Maarif district and the broad avenues around the Place Mohammed V carry the geometry of that era, with Mauresque architecture blending French rationalism with Moroccan ornamental traditions in a way that is specific to this city and this period. Older neighbourhoods such as the Habous quarter, sometimes called the New Medina, were themselves a colonial-era construction, built in the 1930s to a planned interpretation of traditional Moroccan urban form. The result is a city where the layers of the twentieth century are unusually legible, and where a walk between districts can feel like moving through distinct chapters of the same long story.
