Vevey sits on the northern shore of Lake Geneva, cradled between the Lavaux vineyards and the Préalpes, and it carries a particular kind of quiet distinction that larger Swiss cities rarely manage. The old town is compact enough to explore on foot in an afternoon, its arcaded streets and the large Grande-Place market square forming the natural centre of gravity. The square itself hosts one of Switzerland's most celebrated markets, running since the Middle Ages, and every twenty-five years or so it becomes the stage for the Fête des Vignerons, a festival of winemaking traditions so deeply rooted in local identity that UNESCO added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage. The most recent edition, in 2019, drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to a town of fewer than twenty thousand residents, which gives some sense of the event's scale relative to the place.
