Few Mexican port cities carry as much historical weight as Veracruz. It was here, on the Gulf Coast, that Hernán Cortés landed in 1519, and the city has been absorbing and reinterpreting outside influences ever since. The Afro-Caribbean influence on the local culture, cuisine, and music distinguishes Veracruz from the highland cities of Mexico in ways that become apparent within hours of arrival.
