Ballard, once a Scandinavian fishing community, retains enough of that heritage to make the National Nordic Museum a genuinely rooted institution rather than a curiosity; the museum's permanent collection traces five centuries of Nordic migration and cultural exchange across North America, and it remains one of the more distinctive cultural stops in the Pacific Northwest.
