Pompeii Tickets
Book Pompeii tickets to explore one of the world's most important archaeological sites. Pompeii was a thriving Roman city of 11,000 people when Mount Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79 AD. The eruption buried the city under 4 to 6 metres of volcanic ash and pumice, preserving buildings, artefacts and even human remains for nearly 2,000 years. Rediscovered in 1748, Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 66 hectares with approximately two-thirds excavated.
The Forum and Public Buildings
The Forum was the political, religious and economic centre of Pompeii. The rectangular open space measures 38 by 157 metres and is surrounded by the remains of temples, markets and civic buildings. The Basilica served as the law court and business centre. The Temple of Jupiter stands at the north end with Mount Vesuvius visible behind it. The Macellum was the covered food market.
The Amphitheatre and Theatres
Pompeii's Amphitheatre is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre, built around 80 BC. It could hold 20,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests. The Large Theatre (Teatro Grande) seated 5,000 for plays and performances. The smaller Odeon (Teatro Piccolo) held 1,500 for music and poetry recitals.
Houses and Villas
The House of the Faun is one of the largest and finest private residences in Pompeii, covering 3,000 square metres. It contained the famous Alexander Mosaic, now in the Naples Archaeological Museum. The House of the Vettii belonged to wealthy freedmen and features well-preserved frescoes. The House of the Tragic Poet has the famous mosaic of a chained dog with the inscription Cave Canem" (Beware of the Dog).
Villa of the Mysteries
The Villa of the Mysteries is located just outside the city walls and is included with the Pompeii Plus ticket. It contains some of the finest surviving Roman frescoes depicting what may be a Dionysiac initiation ritual. The paintings cover three walls of a room and date to around 60 BC.
Daily Life in Pompeii
Pompeii's streets reveal everyday Roman life. The Stabian Baths and Forum Baths show the Roman bathing culture with hot, warm and cold rooms. Thermopolia (fast food counters) line the streets with their built-in terracotta containers for hot food. The Lupanar is the city's brothel with small stone beds and erotic frescoes. Bakeries still have millstones and ovens intact.
Plaster Casts
In 1863, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli developed a technique of pouring plaster into the cavities left by decomposed bodies in the ash. The resulting casts capture the victims' final moments. Several casts are displayed throughout the site, including in the Garden of the Fugitives where 13 people sought shelter.
