Vivian Beaumont Theater: Lincoln Center's Broadway House
The Vivian Beaumont Theater is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 150 W 65th Street, New York, NY 10023, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,080 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1965.
History of Vivian Beaumont Theater
The Vivian Beaumont Theater opened on October 21, 1965, as part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen with interior theater design by legendary set designer Jo Mielziner, the theater features a modernist concrete-and-glass structure with a thrust stage configuration.
The building's striking exterior features massive concrete columns supporting a dramatic cantilever roof. A reflecting pool by sculptor Henry Moore adorns the plaza entrance. The theater's thrust stage, which extends into the audience, creates a more intimate relationship between performers and audience than a traditional proscenium house.
Lincoln Center Theater has produced some of the most acclaimed work in Broadway history at the Beaumont. The Coast of Utopia, The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific (2008 revival), The King and I (2015 revival), My Fair Lady (2018 revival), and Contact all played here. The theater has won numerous Tony Awards and is consistently regarded as one of the premier stages in New York.
