Din guide til Rotorua
Few cities announce themselves quite like Rotorua. The sulphurous tang in the air hits before you've left the airport car park, a reminder that this corner of the Bay of Plenty sits directly atop one of the most geothermally active zones on earth. The Taupo Volcanic Zone runs beneath the city like a slow engine, pushing boiling mud, silica terraces, and superheated steam through the ground in ways that have shaped everything here, from the landscape to the culture to the daily rhythms of the people who call it home.
The geothermal story is best read across several sites rather than one. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, south of the city, presents a landscape that seems to belong to another planet: champagne pools tinted by arsenic and sulphur, craters ringed in vivid yellows and oranges, and the Lady Knox Geyser erupting on a reliable morning schedule. The scale and colour of the place make it one of the most photographed natural sites in New Zealand, and tickets are straightforward to arrange in advance. Hell's Gate, to the north-east near Tikitere, offers a rawer encounter with the same forces. The geothermal walk passes boiling waterfalls and the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, and the mud bath and sulphur spa experience draws visitors who want something more immersive than observation alone. The Māori carving component available at Hell's Gate adds a cultural dimension that grounds the visit in the history of the Ngāti Rangiteaorere people who have held this land for centuries.
