History of Todd Haimes Theatre

The Todd Haimes Theatre opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, designed by George Keister in early Italian Renaissance style. The theater sat dark for many years during the decline of 42nd Street before the Roundabout Theatre Company revived it in 2000 as the American Airlines Theatre as part of the broader Times Square redevelopment.

The interior features a blue and antique gold auditorium with large murals entitled 'Spanish Lovers' by Hungarian artist Willy Pogany. The $35 million renovation preserved these original design elements while modernizing the theater's technical capabilities.

The theater was renamed the Todd Haimes Theatre in 2024, honoring the longtime Roundabout artistic director who transformed the company from a small off-Broadway troupe into one of the largest nonprofit theater organizations in the country. Notable productions include Betrayal (2000 opening production), The Pajama Game (2006 revival), Long Day's Journey Into Night (2016), and A Soldier's Play (2020).
