About
Studio 54: From Legendary Nightclub to Broadway Stage
The Studio 54 is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 254 W 54th Street, New York, NY 10019, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,010 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1927 (as theater); reopened 1998.
History of Studio 54
Studio 54 opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House, designed by Eugene De Rosa. The building gained worldwide fame in 1977 when Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager transformed it into Studio 54, the nightclub that defined an era of celebrity excess and disco culture. Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, and Truman Capote were among the regulars.
The Roundabout Theatre Company converted the space into a legitimate Broadway theater in 1998, preserving the building's dramatic 50-foot dome decorated with medallions and its ornate marble and plaster ornamentation. A remarkable engineering detail: the building's foundation was originally suspended from the roof to avoid disrupting New York City Subway construction beneath.
Since its theatrical rebirth, Studio 54 has hosted acclaimed productions. The Roundabout's revival of Cabaret (1998-2004) ran for 2,377 performances. Other notable productions include Into the Woods (2002 revival), Assassins (2004), A Streetcar Named Desire (2005), and She Loves Me (2016 revival).
