About
Shubert Theatre: The Heart of Broadway
The Shubert Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 225 W 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,502 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1913.
History of Shubert Theatre
The Shubert Theatre opened on October 21, 1913, designed by Henry Beaumont Herts in Venetian Renaissance style. Located on West 44th Street, the theater is the flagship venue of the Shubert Organization, the largest theater owner on Broadway, and has served as the company's headquarters for over a century.
The theater's facade features heavy rusticated terra-cotta pilasters and arches, and both the exterior and interior are designated New York City landmarks. Shubert Alley, the narrow passageway connecting 44th and 45th Streets, was originally built as a fire escape between the Shubert and Booth theaters. It became one of Broadway's most famous gathering spots, where actors, producers, and fans have mingled for over a century.
The Shubert's production history is extraordinary. Babes in Arms (1937), Pal Joey (1941), and Kiss Me, Kate (1948) all premiered here. I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962) marked Barbra Streisand's Broadway debut. A Chorus Line relocated here from the Public Theater in 1975 and ran for 6,137 performances, holding the record for Broadway's longest-running production for 16 years.
