Lyceum Theatre: Broadway's Oldest Treasure
The Lyceum Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 149 W 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 922 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1903.
History of Lyceum Theatre
The Lyceum Theatre opened on November 2, 1903, designed by Herts and Tallant for impresario Daniel Frohman. It is the oldest continuously operating legitimate theater in New York City, a Beaux-Arts masterpiece that has hosted live theater without interruption for over 120 years.
The gray limestone facade features six Corinthian columns, a vaulted domed lobby ceiling, and a mansard roof with three illuminated windows. Daniel Frohman maintained an apartment above the theater and was famous for watching performances through a small window above the stage. The theater seats 922 across three levels: Orchestra (409), First Balcony (287), Second Balcony (210), and 16 box seats.
The Lyceum has hosted landmark productions across every era of Broadway. Born Yesterday ran for 1,642 performances beginning in 1946. More recent acclaimed productions include I Am My Own Wife, The Humans (which transferred from the Hayes), and the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Inheritance.
