Laura Pels Theatre: Roundabout's Off-Broadway Home
The Laura Pels Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 111 W 46th Street, New York, NY 10036, this off-broadway theater has a capacity of 425 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 2004.
History of Laura Pels Theatre
The Laura Pels Theatre opened in March 2004 as part of the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, home to the Roundabout Theatre Company's off-Broadway programming. The venue was created through a renovation of the former American Place Theatre by Fred Basch Architect, transforming the space into a modern subterranean theater with clean sightlines and a distinctive blue-toned architectural palette.
Named after Laura Pels, president of the Laura Pels Foundation and a major benefactor of American theater, the venue is dedicated to showcasing new plays by established writers. The theater's below-ground design creates an immersive atmosphere that suits the intimate dramas Roundabout is known for producing.
Since opening, the Laura Pels has premiered acclaimed works including Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage (the inaugural production), Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon, and numerous other plays that have gone on to wider recognition.
The theater's location within the Steinberg Center, at 111 West 46th Street in the center of the Theater District, makes it one of the most conveniently located off-Broadway venues in Manhattan. The center also houses rehearsal studios and offices for Roundabout, making it a base of theatrical activity beyond what audiences see on stage.
