About

DR2 Theatre: Intimate Theater at Union Square

The DR2 Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 103 East 15th Street, New York, NY 10003, this off-broadway theater has a capacity of 99 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 2002.

History of DR2 Theatre

The DR2 Theatre is a 99-seat performance space housed within the historic Union Square Savings Bank building at 103 East 15th Street. The building, designed by Henry Bacon in 1905, is a neoclassical landmark featuring a Troy white granite facade with four towering fluted Corinthian columns. Bacon also designed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The DR2 operates alongside the larger Daryl Roth Theatre in the same building, offering an intimate setting for experimental and new works. At just 99 seats, the venue provides the kind of close-quarters theatrical experience that is increasingly rare in New York.

Productions at the DR2 have included That Golden Girls Show, Thom Pain (based on nothing), and other innovative off-Broadway works. Producer Daryl Roth's portfolio includes 13 Tony Award winners and 7 Pulitzer Prize-winning plays.

The Union Square Savings Bank building that houses the DR2 is recognized as a masterpiece of Academic Classic architecture, inspired by the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Its grand banking hall, with soaring ceilings and ornate moldings, provides an unexpected and atmospheric backdrop for theater. The juxtaposition of the building's formal neoclassical architecture with the intimacy of a 99-seat performance space creates a theatrical experience that feels both grand and personal.
