About

Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre: A Shubert Alley Classic

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 242 W 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,100 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1927.

History of Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre opened on January 11, 1927, as the Royale Theatre, designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a Spanish modern style. The golden brick, terracotta, and stone facade sits on West 45th Street, the first of three theaters in the Chanin Complex to open. Interior murals titled 'Spanish Lovers' by Hungarian artist Willy Pogany adorn the auditorium.

The theater was renamed in 2005 after Bernard B. Jacobs, the longtime president of the Shubert Organization who oversaw the company's operations from 1972 until his death in 1996. Mae West's Diamond Lil (1928) was one of the theater's earliest hits.

The Jacobs has hosted a remarkable range of productions. The Glass Menagerie (1946), A Raisin in the Sun (2004 revival), Glengarry Glen Ross (2005), God of Carnage (2009), and the Tony-winning musical Once (2012) all played here. The theater is a consistent home for some of Broadway's most talked-about productions.
