About
Barclays Center: Brooklyn's Premier Entertainment Arena
The Barclays Center is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 620 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217, this arena has a capacity of 17,732 for basketball; up to 19,000 for concerts and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 2012.
History of Barclays Center
Barclays Center opened on September 28, 2012, with a concert by Jay-Z, who was one of the venue's original minority investors and a Brooklyn native. Designed by SHoP Architects with AECOM, the arena's distinctive weathered steel facade was an immediate architectural landmark, earning recognition as one of the most striking sports venues built in the 21st century.
The 675,000-square-foot arena was the centerpiece of the Atlantic Yards development in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Its exterior features 12,000 pre-weathered steel panels that create a warm, rust-colored skin, while the oculus, a 117-by-58-foot opening at the main entrance, serves as both a visual gateway and a natural ventilation system.
Since opening, Barclays Center has hosted over 200 events per year, including Brooklyn Nets NBA games, New York Islanders NHL games (2015-2024), major concerts, boxing matches, and family shows. The arena has also been home to major awards shows and cultural events.
