About

Astor Place Theatre: A Greenwich Village Landmark

The Astor Place Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 434 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003, this off-broadway theater has a capacity of 299 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1968.

History of Astor Place Theatre

The Astor Place Theatre opened as a performing arts venue in 1968, housed in Colonnade Row (LaGrange Terrace), a series of Greek Revival townhouses built between 1831 and 1833 on Lafayette Street. The original buildings, designed by Ithiel Town, Alexander Jackson Davis, and James Dakin, featured imposing marble Corinthian columns and were home to some of New York's wealthiest families, including the Astors and Vanderbilts.

The theater made history as the home of Blue Man Group, which premiered here in 1991 and ran for over 17,000 performances across more than three decades. The show's combination of music, comedy, and multimedia art became a New York institution. Al Pacino made his stage debut here in The Indian Wants the Bronx (1968).

The 299-seat venue sits in one of Manhattan's most vibrant neighborhoods, surrounded by the restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions of the East Village and NoHo.
