History of Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre opened on March 28, 1927, designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a 'modern Spanish' style with a terra-cotta base and ornamental arched windows. Located on West 44th Street, the Majestic is one of Broadway's largest and most storied houses, with 1,681 seats across a single large balcony instead of the more common two-tiered design.

The theater incorporated innovative stadium seating in its Orchestra section, a forward-thinking design choice that provided better sightlines and foreshadowed modern theater architecture. The single-balcony layout also proved ahead of its time, becoming a preferred configuration for contemporary theaters.

The Majestic was home to The Phantom of the Opera from 1988 to 2023, a run of 13,981 performances that made it the longest-running production in Broadway history. Before Phantom, the theater hosted the original productions of Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The Music Man (1957), Camelot (1960), A Little Night Music (1973), The Wiz (1975), and 42nd Street (1980).

Seating and Accessibility

The theater seats 1,681 across two levels: Orchestra and Balcony. The single-balcony design and stadium seating provide strong sightlines throughout. Center Orchestra rows D through O are considered prime, and front Balcony rows offer a commanding view of the full stage.

Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in the Orchestra. Assistive listening devices are provided. The theater has accessible restrooms on the Orchestra level.
